How does a student keep his or her faith while attending college? Students are flooded with new ideas/thoughts from their influences of school, people and culture. The voices we believe will determine the future we will experience. A student can become so focused on the things they do not have and are blinded by God’s activity in their own lives. God hasn’t called young people to try and survive the world but to change it for His glory. And if their personal tensions in life are too big for them, they can easily forget it’s the right size for Jesus to reveal Himself in their lives!
G.R. Tweed hid in the jungles of Guam for nearly 3 years to avoid the Japanese concentration camps during WWII. Tweed found a way to miraculously survive the thick jungle and the Japanese occupied island. On July 10, 1944 Tweed noticed a friendly vessel off in the distance and this was his one chance to make contact with his potential rescue. Tweed climbed up the mountain and used a small but effective tool to bring hope to his current situation. Tweed had a small mirror that he held in his hand and he used the sunrays to direct a message back to the ship off into the distance. 3 short flashes. 3 short flashes. 3 short flashes. 3 more long flashes translating a familiar cry for help SOS. A sailor caught the dashes of the flashing of sunrays and a rescue-motorized boat was sent to quietly get G.R. Tweed and bring him aboard the ship. Tweed was saved and the x-factor to his rescue was a small yet powerful mirror.
Tweed was thankful he had his mirror and that he knew how to use the mirror for his rescue. Suppose the mirror resisted, pushed it’s own agenda. Rather than reflect a message from the sun, it went with it’s own message. What if the mirror translated a message of “HERE I AM” instead of SOS?
We are God’s mirrors, instruments from God’s own hand to reflect one message: God’s glory. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we are like reflecting mirrors shinning the brightness of The Lord, we all reflect the Lord’s glory.
-Let your message reflect His Glory Matthew 5:16
-Let your salvation reflect God’s glory Ephesians 1:13-14
-Let your body reflect God’s glory 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
-Your struggles reflect God’s glory 2 Cor 4:15-John 11:4
-Your success honors God Proverbs 3:9, 1 Chronicles 29:12
***Everything reflects our God’s glory! (Colossians 3:17)**
God is the source, we are the glass. He is the light, we are the mirrors. He sends the message we simply mirror His message! Mr. Tweed’s use of the mirror led to a rescue. May God use us to lead to many more rescues!
The faith to step out is worthless without the faithfulness to stick it out! During the college years a student should ask themselves, “What is my life reflecting?” Extraordinary moves of God begin with ordinary acts of obedience and nothing gets stronger without resistance! Stay close to Christian influences, find a community of people that are running after Christ to do life with, daily seek God’s wisdom in His word and ask a seasoned Christian adult to speak into and mentor you through life. Being brave doesn’t mean we have no fear or we don’t have obstacles in our lives, it means we refuse to be weighted down or overcome by them. What is your life reflecting during the college years?
